Around 16 million people switched on their television sets to see Jessica Ennis celebrate her victory with a gold medal following a thrilling battle with Jessica Zelinka in the women’s heptathlon event at the 2012 London Olympics.
In an interview after the heptathlon, Jessica Ennis told reporters that she had to unburden herself from the intense pressure placed on her shoulders. Jessica Ennis’ gold medal helped Great Britain record their most glorious day in modern Olympics history.
Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford also played an important role in the history making process for Great Britain. Mo Farah won men’s 10,000 metre race and Greg Rutherford won men’s long jump event.
The 26-year-old heptathlon runner Jessica Ennis was humble and fresh on Sunday morning, in spite of having only two hours of sleep. Jessica Ennis told reporters that she believed her fiancé Andy Hill “got the worst of it”.
“I think obviously I was really aware of all the pressure and what people were expecting me to do,” said Jessica Ennis. “Everyone was just expecting me to win so I have had a few moments at home with my fiancé worrying a bit and wondering if it was all going to go right - the way I wanted it to - or whether something would happen and it would fall apart, so it was a huge amount of pressure.”
Jessica Ennis became an unofficial face for the 2012 London Olympics. Jessica Ennis was also being hailed as an icon of victory by Great Britain before the Olympics began.
“But again, just such a unique position that I was in and I wanted to make the most of that opportunity - just make sure I trained as hard as I could and delivered on those two days. Thankfully I can sit here and say that I did,” Jessica Ennis continued.
Saturday night saw Great Britain celebrate a golden hat-trick. The Olympic Stadium became the center of attention as Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford acquired gold medals in their respective events within 45 minutes of each other’s victories.
